In May, my niece, Nora, made her entrance into this world. To celebrate, my husband and I decided to make a bird mobile, using the pattern from Spool. We used scraps of fabric to make the birds, most of which are based on birds we remember from our childhood (the robin, the raven, the bluejay and cardinal, etc.). The orange bird, however, is a flight of fancy – our version of the extinct Doodoo bird.
Our words of the wise would be to glue the birds onto the branches first, and then find the center of gravity. This allows you to pull off the birds, without undoing the embroidery feet, if you need to adjust them to find the center of gravity. Once you have that figured out,you can stitch the feet on, drill the holes in and put in the eye hooks. This part, assembling the mobile, is by far the most time consuming and tedious. (Making the birds is the fun part!)
scrap fabrics (mostly cottons), thread, embroidery floss for the birds "feet", branches from a tree, fishing line, eye hooks, a ring for hanging the mobile, glue gun, drill,
