Nijiri - Twisted Top from Pattern Magic

Description
Some of you allready know, that i am totally in love with the japanese pattern books “pattern magic”. this time i tried to do the nijiri top, wich is a sweatshirt-kind-of-top with a twist. the interesting thing, is that you have to cut the whole body with the arms (front and back) in one part. so you have a really big piece of pattern :-)
I followed the instructions, made a muslin and was instantly in love. i went completly berserque in buying knitwear and finished in a 3-day-sewing-session the first 5 nijiri-tops.
All of them (except the orange-red-striped one) are gone allready to friends, so i just work on a few new ones now. (pix are soon to come)
The scarve came as an extra on top, as you have some material left, after cutting out the really big main-part. I love the look and it is really fun to make, as you can do the mashine-sewing with the serger and there is not that much to do for the finish by hand (just the seams at the bottom and round the neck)
hope you like it
Material Notes
All different kind of knits and jerseys, mostley in cotton, but some in wool and some in cashmere
Difficulty
Intermediate

Ralf- You’ve inspired me (and many others it seems ) to do a pattern magic project. I’ve been afraid of the book, but this project looks doable. Thanks for the tip on using an already existing garment as a block. I have the perfect knit to do it with, and I’m excited. Thanks to you I’m pushing the envelope, and broading my horizons. People like you are the reason I’m on this site! XOXOXX

Awesome work Ralph! I have two of the pattern magic books, but I haven’t tried my hand at any of the patterns. I always get a little worried that it will be too complicated :) You did a great job, and it’s very inspirational. Maybe I’ll try my hand on one of these one day :)

dear joost! it is such a great book and if you use one of your best fitting long-sleeved-t-shirt or shirt as a sample for the base, you will see, that the rest is really easy! and it is such fun to make them- i just have sold 3 more of them in grey, beige, and bourgundy-red. thank you very much for your comment my dear and can not wait to see yours……..

Love them so much! Also very jealous, I have tried to make this top and totally ruined it:) I think I made it to small and was very uncomfortable. Maybe I will try it again. Now I’m working on the puzzle dress from pattern magic.

dearest timea! maybe you try the following: use one of your very simple longsleeved t-shirts as a base for the pattern and copy that one first onto a piece of paper, and than work from there all the next steps, as shown in the book. that should give you a well fitting pattern in the end. can’t wait, seeing your dress! love from berlin

Dear Berserk : )
Truly handsome contemporary styling. The fact that these tops can be created on the serger appeals to me. I’m currently making some dresses and tops that are made almost exclusively on the serger. I hope I can find time to publish them soon. Love your choices for these projects. You should open a boutique! And I should check out pattern magic!

This time I am 3rd to comment!!! I am getting slow. Anyway, I love these Twisted tops and scarves that you have made. I have that book and you have given a new meaning and inspiration to the twisted top pattern. I think I will try one out on my son as I know he will love it. You have chosen great fabrics which look like they will keep you very warm and the most stylish man in Berlin!!!
