New year, new style, this time it has to be a couturier dress.
I have been dreaming about making a couturier dress for a long time. Now I have a pack of Vogue Couturier patterns that have to be used.
One of my favourites is this Pertegaz space age dress.
Pertegaz, as well as Belinda Bellville and Fabiani have amazed the fashion world with their timeless, understated pieces. Pertegaz’s fashion message depends on perfection of construction, cut and design. One can tell he is a disciple of Balenciaga.
This is a coat dress(fully lined), with a buttoned belt at the back and integrated flaps. All pieces are hand sewn against the lining and the interfacing (where present) before any stitching is done.
The dress itself looks very simple, and it is meant to look like that. However, the pattern is quite complex and time consuming. Well worth it, though. There are numerous “corners” and points where a few stitching lines have to meet perfectly. Well, mine did not always meet, so I had to re-sew some stitches again and again, despite of marking all sewing lines with thread on every single piece, as required. You do need loads of patience and a very good fabric! Do follow the instructions precisely and avoid alterations! The dress is cut in such a way, that any deviation from the original patter will spoil the perfect cut.
Fabric-wise, I used camel colour polyester mix which I purchased a while ago abroad. It has some stretch, but it is not comparable to jersey.
The dress is worn with a retro style Marks and Spencer hat, Rupert Sanderson shoes as featured in Burda magazine and Wallis coat. Tights from Classic Cotton.
mix polyester, invisible zip, two press studs for teh neck and four large buttons (two on the flaps and two for the belt)

Irina, this is lovely and so elegant. I have started watching ‘Mad Men’ and you look like you have come off the set of that TV seris. I can imagine how difficult those front waist flaps were!! Well done, keep up the good work.

Yes, they are difficult to make, as there is no cut above them, they come as an elongation of the front sides and hide three 3 mm pleats each, if you can believe this!!!
The tragedy is that I cut corners with this, and now I regret it. I did not have neough fabric, unfortunately, and decided to make the front smaller and adapt everything else. Big mistake, the dress is now too tight for me. Nevermind! I must watch “Mad Men” by all means.
