I started this quilt a long time ago, but I used my day off today to finally finish it. I made it for my son, and he’s been waiting patiently for it.
Cotton quilting fabric.

Thanks everyone!
The quilt pattern is from the book One Block Wonder(s), by Maxine Rosenthal (I think, I’ve been making these for so long I can’t remember exactly… But if you google it you’ll find it.) I really prefer art quilts over traditional quilts, so these have become a staple in my creativity.
For kaleidoscopes I try to choose fabrics that have a lot of natural movement to them. They work best when there is a big color contrast, but not too many colors in the print itself. The fish fabric was perfect because it incorporated a lot of energy in the way the fish turned their tails and such.
Ralf, the machine quilting was the kicker on this one… I started off using my embroidery machine to do the quilting, but I only have a small hoop and it was taking too long! I am a little embarrassed to admit that I started this for my son in 2007. So I simplified the machine quilting and just called it good so he could have it on his bed before he became a teenager. Using the embroidery machine to do the quilting was a cool concept in theory but in real life it wasn’t real feasible.
Anyway, I am ultimately very pleased with the end result. :-) I know the “busyness” isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but I like it!

I never thought that such a colourful fabric looks good as a quilt. But the way you choose the pattern is great.
