Description

this is a one-shouldered dress I designed myself. I made the pattern and first made it out of muslin.
I have had to adjust this a few times and I still think there’s something “off” about it.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Material Notes

Silver satin

Thank you for the help everyone. I am going to try to post a few pictures and also try a lining.

I would add some embelishment. Perhaps a big satin flower on the neckline (sleeveless side), something Carrie Bradshaw style!

I agree with the others in that you might wish to post a few more pic’s to look at the ‘details.’ I think you look beautiful and I personally love the form. I had a dress like this in the 80’s and the only thing I can perceive from the faint image (In my extremely limited knowledge of sewing is regarding the bottom band…Is the bottom band doubled?) i.e. instead of making a hem you folded the band so that the right side of the fabric carries up against your skin on the wrong side of the dress the full height of the band? If so maybe that poofi-ness isn’t jiving with the rest of the design, that dress despite being ‘moomoo ish- baggy style…sorry don’t know the politically correct term ’ is very lean, drape-y, and sexy,….(just a thought) Perhaps a hem rather than a poof at the bottom will allow the dress to fall in a slinky-er fashion. I swear I had the exact same dress and made out of silk with some very 80’s pattern… I love the dress on you and sorry about the rip…so crappy! ugh. I was about to go out the other day not realizing I had serged a bunch of seams together at the last minute….(seams that were not supposed to be there.)

I find that when making a Balloon dress you need to make a lining that is "slimmer than the actual Balloon . Make the lining about two(2) inches shorter than the out side. When they are attached to each other the lining will bring up the outer skirt giving it that balloon affect . then you can attach the lower band portion. the shorter lining will keep the balloon from sagging. Hope this makes sense.

I would put some elastic in the bottom band to pull it in and give a bit of a ‘puff-ball’ effect. You could also try putting a beaded trim around the neckline/shoulder area…?

a few more pics would help. It seems like it’s not draping quite right and the sleeve might need to be pulled in a bit tighter. i would probably tighten the bottom band as well, just for more shape.

Also, the night I went to wear this on vacation right before we got to the restaurant, my husband notices a HUGE rip on the side seam, so I didn’t get to wear it.

Oh no! It’s a good thing you caught that rip before you went out though!

Its looks like a nice design though – maybe you just need it to be a bit more structured?. Perhaps you could post a few more pics?
