I needed a special dress for my birthday party. I was turning 50…I was born in the 50’s…I had just scored, on eBay, a lot of real vintage ties from the 50’s for seven dollars and (you guessed it) 50 cents. Hence, this dress was born.
The corset shaped bodice is made of overlapped vintage rayon neckties. The rest of the dress is polyester.
Butterick 6582 for the skirt and back. I created the sleeves and bodice.

Hi loyl8
Thanks for your nice comments. What I did was open up the ties and take out the interfacing from each, but then folded them back into their original form. I basted them, edge to edge on a piece of fabric and then hand-stitched them together along their folded edges. Finally, I took out the basting and used my sewn-together ties as a single piece of fabric to cut the bodice. I essentially draped the shaped for the bodice front right on my body and drafted a pattern for the sleeves. Then I incorporated my bodice and sleeves into Butterick 6582. The back of “view B” is what the back of my dress looks like. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions.
Thanks for asking :-)

Really creative use of the ties, especially the choice of colours!

Love the way the colors of the ties complement one another so nicely. Great imagination!

That’s so original! The dress fits you very well and the ties work great as the bodice. That must have been a lot of work. And, if I may say so, I really hope to have a figure like yours by the time I turn 50 (27 now), you look great in that fitted dress!

Wow. That is fabulous. I made some pillows out of ties once, but a dress. What a great idea. And it fits you so nice. Great job.
