Burda Style For people who sew
Description
This is my first completed dress from Colette Pattern’s Macaron Dress. I have always admired this pattern and all of the variations I have seen of it, so I am excited to now have my own Macaron. If anyone out there is considering using this pattern, I would say go for it! The directions are well written and easy to follow, and the final product is beautiful.
My fabric selection was inspired by BurdaStyle member Sibeli’s Love Love Ikat II, and by inspired I mean to say that I was a total copycat. Sibeli’s dress has been in my favorites on BurdaStyle for quite some time.
My Macaron is made from cotton for the shell and the contrasting fabric is silk organza.
Now I just need to find an occasion to wear my new favorite dress!

where did you find this fabric? i’ve had a hard time finding ikat that isn’t intended for home decorating.

I got the fabric from my local store in Berkeley, Stone Mountain Daughter. Other than that I can’t be of much help because I don’t remember who made it… sorry!

This is gorgeous! I wanted to use a sheer contrast fabric for my macaron too, but was unsure about what to do with the sleeves. Did you use the same silk organza for the sleeves? They look a little more opaque than the bodice panel in the pictures.

Thanks! I used the same silk for the sleeves. They look opaque because the pattern has you make the sleeves double layered for the nice scalloped detail. If you want to keep it sheer, you could probably just do one layer and finish the edge differently. Hope that helps!

This is so perfect!! and a great take on Sibeli’s version! I’m about to start sewing my own Macaron- do you have any tips for sewing organza? (finishing the seams/hems?) I love the sheer and ikat combination.

Thanks! I found the organza pretty easy to work with, except for the fact that it’s sheer. I didn’t want any seam allowances to show through, so I would sew the seams as usual, press and topstitch them down, and then trim the excess. Let me know if you have any other questions, and happy sewing!
