Description

This was my second attempt at creating a garment (the first being the Hope Wrap Dress that I need to put up here too) and I can’t say how pleased I am with how it has turned out! I had downloaded the Obi Apron pattern and was wondering if I could possibly turn it into a skirt a while ago and it was on a recent trip to Liberty’s that I spotted this fabric and decided it was time to give it a try. You never know! So I did! I went along using my gut instinct to inform me and made a fair few changes to the original (im a size 10-12 and it was never going to be as simple as sewing up the panels with my hips!) including adding a zip to the back. I have only attempted sewing in a zip once before on a little pencil case I made that didn’t turn out exactly as I hoped. But again I just went for it and after a bit of unpicking I think it has come out great! In fact I am wearing it today at work and to dinner tonight, I cant wait for someone to comment on it so I can say “I whipped it up this weekend!”

Because I didn’t really know what I was doing and thought it was better to go bigger rather than smaller when I was cutting, the skirt has ended up larger than I intended. I was going to just take it in at the back but after trying it on and tying the ties up at the front, I really like the way it ruches up the obi band at the front. It reminds me of that origami look that is around at the moment. So im going to leave it as is for a little while and then maybe give it a new look by taking in the back after a few wears. Maybe it will almost feel like I made two skirts instead of just the one?

This project has given me the confidence to try some more of my own patterns now (im going to use some of my current clothes as guides) and sew myself some summer, beach type dresses. I will post them up here when I hopefully successfully complete them. I might even try to share some of my patterns if anyone likes them.

Material Notes

1.5 m cotton (Fish lips by Brandon Mably) One regular zipper (I have forgotten the size already!)

Sweet! Your project makes me want to attempt my own! Good job with the work around the hips – I feel your pain. I have to alter everything a tad.
