Burda Style For people who sew

My sister had been looking around the shops for a bright green dress, but to no avail. So I thought I would make her one instead. Initially, she had described a shift dress with bust darts, back darts and NO waist seam. After some weeks of drafting and fiddling, we decided to base it on a pattern I already had in my stash instead. ….that was back in April… and now, after some delay, it’s finished and ready for the Australian Spring/Summer!

This retro 1996 Style pattern was passed on to me by a work colleague. The dress is based on Dress D (see last pic) with a few minor modifications. The original pattern had the bilateral side seam side-splits that were oh-so-popular in the late 90s (ahh, fond memories!) which I omitted and instead added the slit at the back of the skirt at the midline seam. I also had to adjust the pattern slightly to achieve a more fitted silhouette. As usual, I substituted the dress zipper with an invisible zipper. It was an easy pattern to follow, with very few pattern pieces involved.

Premium cotton sateen (green) 127cm wide ($12.99/metre from Spotlight- luckily I waited for the 30% off sale); interfacing; 56cm invisible zipper (black); hook and eye; thread;

Pattern notes also suggest cotton and cotton blends, silks and silk types, crepe, crepe back satin, laundered silk-rayons, linen and linen blends.
