Burda Style For people who sew
Description
This was my first blouse and my first time sewing satin, which was a challenge. The non-understandable instructions did the rest ;) The ruffles were a bit difficult, because of the flowing fabric. Made some alterations for a better fit. The hem-line is shit, I think I’ll do it again (I think is absolutely impossible to make the stitches for the hemline invisible on satin so I think I’ll topstich it). Some arm movements are not so good in this blouse, so today my first time wearing it (right after finishing it ;)) the seams at the back gave way (correct english?). It took me very long to do this so finally I’m glad I finished it. It’s not perfect, but ok. Looking at those photos I uploaded I think the sleeves hang down a little bit too much.

Love your blouse. The red satin is hot and i think it looks very pretty on you. You get a pat in the back for working with satin. I’m not that brave yet.

If you plan to top-stitch the hem, perhaps you should try a special presser foot for your sewing machine, that is called a hemmer. I think a 3-4 mm wide hemmer should be appropriate with this fabric.

I think you’re very brave to try this in satin, and I admire your perseverance to finish it. Sewing satin is so frustrating. I don’t think the sleeves hang to much, but I’m afraid that the proble you have with arm movement means you should have a little more room at the upper back. If you didn’t clip your seam allowances, try to redo those seams at the back in such a way that you add a little bit of space there (if possible, because old stitching tends to show in satin). For the hem, I’ve got another suggestion you could try: take some bias tape, open one of the folds and stitch in the fold along the bottom edge of your shirt, press all of the bias tape to the inside and topstitch along the folded upper edge of the bias tape. This should prevent puckering because the tape will be a bit firmer and less slippery than the satin and because it’s on the bias you can shape it along curved hems

I think the sleeves look good. I am at the moment sewing a tunic with a satin I got for 2 dollars in the thrift store. I wanted to learn something sewing with satin. I did: it is a frustrating fabric and ravels crazily. So after experimenting a bit, I went to the library for some help. For hems the book says that hem stitching will be only invisible if attached to underlining. If the garnment is not underlined, it gives only one option: rolled hem. I don’t think I can do that (the book explains an “easy way” for doing this with a serger. If you own one, send me a pm)
The book says topstitched hem in satin will pucker, I tried and it puckers. I am going to do it anyway, but if this was a serious project in satin silk I will definetly bring it to a dressmaker to finish. From my experiments so far, relaxing the tension on the top and a longer stitch (3) puckers the less. Best of luck!!

It’s very pretty. I’m trying to see every stuff up as a lesson learned. A bit of swearing tends to always make everything better – and the sewing machine and blouse won’t hear you so they won’t be offended!
