My Open Back Dress

Added Apr 15, 2013

by mgellner

Saskatoon, Canada

Here is my attempt at the open back dress. I did make it full length but then decided to cut it off as I liked it better short. The fit was a little tricky since the bodice gaped at the sides. I did manage to bring it in though and it fits nicely now.

Hi! I was wondering if you used the boning? I am currently trying to make this dress and I would like to think I am a mediocre sewer, but this dress is giving me so many problems!!

Hi, I did use the boning but I don’t think it really helped with the shape and it pokes me in the sides when I wear the dress so… I probably wouldn’t add the boning if I made this again.

Burda instructions confuse me as a new sewer :( What do I do with the rest of the strap after sewing between the markings?? Ayuda porfavor!

After sewing the strap along the lengthwise edge you will leave a space open that will later be used for putting the little sleeve in. You will press the seam allowances in and then topstitch both the sleeve and strap. I think that’s what you were asking, if not I can try to explain some more!

Oh wow. I get it now. I just realized I pressed the straps all funny and it made no sense. Thanks so much for your post! So helpful and you dress is awesome!

Thank you for posting a picture of the back-I wanted to see it on someone before I downloaded the pattern…I loved the front, but was hesitant about the back. I really like it though-I love the fabric you used ;)

Thanks! The fabric was actually from the bargain bin so it didn’t say what kind it was. I’m guessing some type of polyester.

This is really gorgeous. Did you base it on a pattern?

Thanks! It’s based on the open back dress burda style pattern from the March issue.
