Burda Style For people who sew
Description
I decided to have a go at this gorgeous Alexander McQueen kimono jacket. I felt I needed a bit of a sewing challenge. And it was challenging indeed. Mostly because the instructions were, well, lacking a bit. So I decided to make one in a cheap fabric, in case it didn’t turn out so well. But I like the result! And I really enjoyed the work. I think I’m going to make another one in a really stiff silk.
Hints for doing your own:
- Seam allowance (1 cm) is included
- Cut 2 of pieces 1,3,4 and 5, cut 1 of pieces 2, 6 and 7
- follow the instructions even when they seem super weird
To make the folds lie flat in the back I sewed them in place on the inside. The instructions didn’t say anything about how to fasten it, so I decided on snaps.
I made the left front a bit shorter, to make it more wearable in everyday.

It looks amazing!!! Like you, I’ll be making the jacket in cheap fabric and will take out the tail-like front portion of the jacket. I’ve got this beautiful green/blue silk fabric with a feather motif that will look fantastic for this jacket.

Hi, it looks great…one question – should I draw all the marks on the right side of the fabric? When it says bring one point to meet another, does that mean I should work on the right side or the wrong side? would much appreciate any clues.. thanks

I put all the markings on the wrong side (I think, not sure after all this time…)
I think I sew it together wrong sides facing (you really need to see the markings in order to put it together).
It’s kind of daunting to start this project off (because I couldn’t really get my head around the instructions before starting), but you just have to dive straight in.

Sorry, I didn’t see your question until now. You’ve porbably solved the problem by now…
But, if I remember it correctly, piece 3 is an interfacing for the lower edge of the back.

I’m not really sure, but if you cut out the pieces and put them on, say, the floor you can get an approximation.

Oooh, it’s fabulous! I’m forever waiting to make this one, thank you for adding info about it! The measurements you added below, are they the width of the actual jacket? Do you mind me asking your size in f.ex. H&M clothes (if you know)? Do you think it would fit a H&M size 34 or is it rather a 32? It would be great to know before attempting to sew it :-)

The measurements are my body measurements, so I’m more of a size 34/36 than a 32.
You should give it a try, it’s fun to make!

A-ha! Thank you for answering, then it will probably be a tad big rather than a tad small on me, I think I prefer a tad big. So yes, I really should give it a go, yours looks fantastic (and he was the master, plus I love Japan, so really, I have no excuses…)!

I think it would be nice in wool. I think I’ll wait a while before I make the silk one. I am very easily bored, so I need to have forgotten the sewin process a bit before I do it.

That’s one of the things you can’t figure out from the instructions. It’s quite small (I am). I didn’t make any alterations (except making the sleeves a bit shorter). Bust: 86 cm, waist: 70 cm.
But you can probably adjust the fit by adding extra fabric in the side seams. And depending on where you place the snaps, you can make it fit better.

Bravo for actually making this, and I quite like your ‘scrubs’ version. – In any case it’s a timeless piece, it’s definitely worth trying one in silk, for the future.

Thanks! I was really not sure how it would turn out, that’s why I used a cheaper fabric to try the pattern out. But once I’d started the sewing process it wasn’t super difficult.

You are very brave! I downloaded that pattern, and have read it through countless times in bemusement :-) Yours looks lovely though, and you must definitely make it in a beautiful stiff silk!

I too read the instructions a hundred times and became more and more confused every time I read it. So I just decided to do it before I got too scared. Some of the lines on the pattern aren’t used (not in my version anyway ;)
