Project Runway Season 8 | Episode 1
Challenge Name | And So It Begins
Challenge | The designers were required to swap an article of clothing with a fellow contestant; then design and construct a new garment. This challenge is very parallel to an upcycle project. The designers were granted 5 hours to complete this challenge. This is the shortest amount of time designers have had to complete a challenge in Project Runway history.
My Entry
For this challenge, I purchased a mens sport jacket to create a very unique sheath dress. The jacket was made of a beautiful chocolate brown tweed with tiny specs of primary colors embedded throughout the fabric. I though I had no definite inspiration for this dress, the design was intuitive and I knew that I wanted the lapels to be the primary accent on the dress.
Prior to working on the final garment, I created a muslin (sample) to figure out the design and details. After creating the muslin, I mirror the design to accommodate the closure on the correct side (left) for women’s apparel.

I had too pick my jaw up off the floor after seeing the finished dress. I saw the design before hand and I cannot believe you achieved that stunning dress from just a blazer! I’m really jealous because i get that “vision” of what i what my end piece to look like but i don’t take into consideration what i can actually achieve, so it never looks quite right. but your end piece looks just like the design i am really impressed ,you have the eye and natural talent to create your “visions” to standards fit for royalty.

Awh, Thank you so much. I put a looooooot of effort into my work to make the parallel between the sketch and garment.

At Goodwill’s everywhere – there’s a run on men’s tweed jackets! – this is awesome!
The collar is brilliant….but did you use the sleeve linings as side panels? – that is as, if not more, creative!!

No I didn’t, but I can see how it can be interpeted as such. The solid brown fabric is a cotton sateen. It was purchased at Joann’s.
BTW- I love shopping at thrift store and Tweed is one of my favorite fabrics.

yes the thrift store purchase rocks….i find it somehow frees one up creatively….its like what the heck it was only $2 anyway :)…..although I am not nearly this creatively inspired – your dress is just so cool!

My most sincere congratulations! I wish you the very best of luck. I’ve been so impressed with the construction of all your projects. Your attention to detail is what makes you shine. I trust PR will notice it too! I’m out of the country and can’t watch the show, and up til now I’ve been mostly okay with that, but I admit that if you make it to PR I’ll be sorely disappointed not to be able to follow your work! I’d vote for you in a heartbeat!

I love it, very nice! I like the sculptural look to the bodice of the dress. And the bag? That is amazing looking.

Thank you! The bag isn’t my best work. It was very difficult to sew all those think fabrics together.

Your model is rockin’ it, knockin’ it, and clockin’ it!

Big respect for all the work you’re doing and I really hope you make it to Project Runway. I would LOVE to see you on there.
I watched a couple of your videos about the making of this dress and bag and it’s great to see the finished look, it really is outstanding.
I adore the dress, you’ve got me thinking about heading to the charity shops to see if I can make myself something similar out of a Mens jacket!
All the Best, Candy
