Description

I made this purse last year, my very first!

I saw these felt purses somewhere one day, that opened out completely flat with a zipper running completely around them, and when zipped up, were either round or oval shaped. I didn’t want to bother with the zipper and things but I did like the concept.

I set about looking for industrial grade felt, which I landed up finding just at my local Fabricland, and just cut out some circles and got to work.

I hand sewed this entire thing and although thick felt is hard to hold together, the actual act of getting the needle through is not too bad, if you have a nice sharp but strong needle. I just used slightly thicker, regular sewing needles. Once I was done with the basic stitching – I did a very close and tight running stitch – I went over it with embroidery thread in a blanket stitch for both durability and decoration. I also made sure to reinforce the handles with an extra semi-circular layer of felt, hot glued to the inside to make sure they didn’t buckle with time.

This bag started off my bag making, craft fair obsession that finally led me to Etsy, but this one I’m keeping. Its my first – the perfect alternative to the little black evening purse.

Material Notes

Very thick felt, and more thin felt for decorating!

      Thank you so much!

And no, I will always return to hand sewing for some things. :) Embroidery and detailed work are things I still prefer doing by hand. :D

      I’ll work on a how-to for sure.

In the mean time, I documented the process on my blog and its a pretty clear tutorial – if you can get past my rambling!

Let me know if you’d like clearer instructions though!
