This is my first dress, but actually it is only to try the pattern and the size (i discovered i’m a 16, maybe a little more at the bust) of a pattern, since i didn’t want to waste my precious little piece of silk fabric saved for the top of the ‘real’ dress. I made only the basic part, without any variation just to try the fit and decide later what to do… I had only a short zipper and i hate to sew them, so the upper part has two fabric covered buttons :) i’m tempted to put the Jocelyn bodice, with sleeves (I need sleeves) in stead of this: what do you think?
Very cheap shiny fabric, black lining (from an old halloween costume...)

I also need sleeves on my garments, but I found that length just below the elbow is very feminine and arm-slimming ;) Also, you can add little ruffle or some other interesting detail. Anyway, the dress looks great.

I agree with latjjardbai, the Joceyln sleeves could help. Personally I think you look fabulous but if you feel a bit exposed then maybe you could also take a look at the sleeves on the Bambi and Tara patterns on this site, you might be able to retro fit them somehow or add them into your next attempt. You do look great but it’s always better to feel comfortable in what you are wearing then you’ll feel good and carry yourself with confidence. Well done on your first dress xx

Keep on wearing it – it suits you very good! For your “real” dress you should have a look at kamelias jocelyn – I’m sure you already did ;)
I like her dress a lot – not the average straps or sleeves, very nice!
The dress looks great on you – I dito lottleredbutterfly, the lenght is ment for you and your beautiful legs.
And the fit in the back area is REALY good!
No one ever will no that this is your first dress!
I also agree with you about sleeves or a jacket – the straps don’t do it perfectly.
I’m always scared to show my chubby arms – yours are good to be shown, the matter may be more the realy dark color of the straps compared with your ivory teint and your womenly bust.
Maybe you could transform ellinor into a shrug or something in between blouse and jacket?
That’s what I would change.

I’m playing with the idea of the Jocelyn the only thing is its quite high ‘necked’. i am modifying the pattern to make it a bit lower and the sleeves a little longer (to reach). Buttons are always a winner if you don’t like sewing zips although i have just invested in an invisible zip foot for my Singer and its makes it soooooo much easier.
Your practice dress is a really lovely length and makes you go in and out in all the right places.
Well done and congratulations on your first make.
