This is my skirt for the BurdaStyle Sewing Handbook. I love the way the dark chiffon polka dots show the light crepe de chine polka dots underneath. It looks great when I’m twisting and turning.
I made a size 44 so I could wear it when I got it back. I also modified the pattern a bit. I wanted my waistband to be a cummerbund style with pleating so it needed to be a straight waistband at the real waist, rather than a contoured waistband as the pattern. So, I brought the waist up to natural waist and created the new waistband piece. I also lengthened the over skirt and added a ruffle to the underskirt. I meant to lengthen the skirt overall (the pattern is rather short) but I don’t think that I did enough. It is VERY short on me (I am VERY tall). Micro mini party skirt. The next time I use the pattern I will most like add a few inches.
Construction notes…. I used the selvage edge of the fabric to make the bottom ruffle. I just turned the selvage under and stitched it. I was working on a deadline so I thought that was very efficient. I overlocked all my seam edges. I fought with my sewing machine over the thread tension for a bit… I am not entirely satisfied with my thread tension, but I am satisfied with the overall results.
Also… I was delighted that 2 of my sketches made it onto the skirt inspiration page in the book.
The 3 pictures taken against the brick wall are from before I sent it in to BurdaStyle. The studio looking shots are from the book launch party.

I love your variation! Polka dots and layers in contrasting colors are a great idea! Also, I agree with Carotte, short skirts look nice on you.

I hadn’t thought of coupling twice the same pattern but in different sizes, it’s a good idea, it looks very nice here!
