I really like the idea of being edgy – though I’m sure I’m quite often far off the mark. And I will be good and admit to being vain and pretentious :)
This is a completely trend-driven outfit – high-low hem! skinny leggings! heel-less shoes! While I’m not usually trend driven I admit to being curious about these particular ones for a while, and it’s funny how they all came together without my actually planning them!
This is my first attempt at a complete outfit that is not a dress. The top is a mash-up of two Burda tops. I was inspired by #129 from Burda 4/2012 – a lovely high-low chiffon-layered-over-satin long top. And I took the cowl neck from the plus-size #139 top from the same issue. This is my very first cowl neck, and I didn’t quite know how to resize plus down to regular, but with all that room for error I’m glad it turned out ok.
The leggings I traced off from a pair of my own, made some modifications (basically eliminating the side seam and adding fabric around the seat – my glorious bottom makes my regular leggings split right across the back seam!) and it was good to go.
All in all both garments were very simple. Each took me under 2 hours to make, including drafting and modifying the patterns. Not at all high-level sewing. But I wanted something a little darker, punkier, rock-ier than my usual vintage-inspired/mod dresses, yet that would qualify as everyday wear. I guess I reached my aim.
Found the delightful cat print polyester satin at Spotlight, and it counts as one of my more extravagant fabric purchases (14.00 per metre). It does drape beautifully though, and my excuse is that I’ve recently conquered my fear of sewing with a-little-bit-slippery materials.
The black legging fabric was a steal at the same excursion – a wet-look spandex type with leopard-print velvet flocking! It was reduced from around 35.00 per metre to the grand price of 4.99 permetre so I snapped up 3 metres of it. Now I don’t know what to do with so much, especially since I’ve found that the velvet bits rub off with friction! I’ve been leaving little black bits behind on the chairs when I get off :((
Each garment took less than a metre of the above-mentioned fabric.
