This week the Sew Weekly challenge was to use a photo of your mother, grandmother, godmother or aunt, as inspiration for your weekly creation. Although inspired by a photo of my mother circa mid 70’s, this dress is rather different than what she was actually wearing in the shot. As I was only able to see the top half of her outfit in the photo ( navy blue button down), I let my imagination guide what you might find below. I’ve also vowed to use my current fabric stash prior to seeking out new material when possible. I don’t think I would have come up with this combination otherwise. There has also been some discussion about using juvenile quilting prints lately which encouraged me to peruse this route as well.
The dress itself is a mesh of about four different patterns.

it’s lovely, and what a great idea! My Granda recently told me that found my Granny’s stash in his attic!! He said “it’s probably all ancient stuff that you wouldn’t want to use”…..ooOOoo! so i put him right, telling him that it is the ancient stuff that i’d most like to get my hands on!!! I can’t wait to see what’s there!

1976 is my favourite year :-) I remember very well what my mother was wearing then. This collar, the long skirt, the colours and the pattern of the fabric, it’s all 1976! There where a lot of fun fabrics available then, and adults wore prints like this! very nice!

Love the button detail and maybe I should start using my stash too, I have enough to open a shop I am sure.

Thanks. There is so much beautiful fabric to be had that it really can be a challenge. Especially if you buy with no particular project in mind.

Nicely done. Using a fabric stash just adds to the creativity of a garment.

Thank you! It really does. As mentioned, I think it often can lead you to a combination that you wouldn’t consider otherwise. Sometime good, sometimes not so good.
