Vogue 8870: MISSES’ DRESS: Pullover dress has loose-fitting, blouson bodice variations, elasticized (seamed) waist, side pockets and narrow hem. Wrong side shows on back hemline. A: mock wrap, front pleated bodice, and two-piece sleeves. Note: no provisions provided for above waist adjustment. B: elasticized upper back.
Most of my sewing projects are out of style by at least fifty or sixty years. This makes it very easy to ignore trends and never worry about being up to date with fashion trends. With all of the recent fuss over the peplum, I have been questioning my love the 1940s style, because who wants to look just like everybody else? But I went ahead and added one to this decidedly contemporary pattern to put my own spin on the look.
I started with some fabulous leftover fabric hoping to make myself a quick and easy new dress. Of course, I ended up complicating the situation a bit and changed the length, added a belt, and that darn peplum.
The front skirt piece was lengthened by 3" – I used a French Curve to redraw the curve of the skirt. The back skirt length was shortened by 4" which ends up being half way between View A and B. Again, a French Curve was used to redraw the asymmetrical hemline. Do keep in mind that the longer skirt length is really long if cut as drafted!
The front peplum curve matches the front hem. I straightened out the back drop just a bit for the peplum back pieces.
It was necessary to add a snap to the neckline. I do not think I have very broad shoulders, but elastic waist surplice necklines always want to pull open on me.
And for a final touch, I made myself a self-fabric belt.
I will probably use this pattern again at some point. It really is a fun and easy project. I would highly recommend it!
While this may not exactly be my style, I really do like the dress (partly because silk/cotton is one of my favorite fabrics)! Perhaps contemporary design is not too terrible, after all!
