I went to a tea party for a production of Pirates of Penzance. There was a lady’s hat contest. I won. :D
I bought a big, black hat, the kind you would wear to church. I took it apart, and kept the plastic rim and the nylon netting. Tracing the old fabric pieces, I made a pattern for my own fabrics.
I started with the lining layer, sewing the netting to the wrong side of the pink pieces. The plastic rim went into the pink layer.
For the top, I made some freehand pleats to some white and yellow tulle to create a soft gold look, and placed it over some lightly patterned novelty brocade I had left over from a costume from years ago. I sewed netting the wrong side of this fabric combination.
Before I put the layers together, I hand sewed the flowers on. To attach the layers, I sewed a piece of cream blanket binding over the two edges. I unfortunately don’t have pictures of just the hat.
Tulle, polyester satin, fake flowers.
