Description

Pardon the cheesy title. One of my friends had decided she wanted to have a costume party for New Year’s Eve with a historical figure theme, so I altered the Minna to turn it into a Cleopatra dress. (Unfortunately, the party ended up becoming non-costume kind of last minute, so I don’t have any pictures of me wearing it. :-( ) Anyway, for the dress, I lengthened it to ankle-length with slits on both side seams, raised the neckline to the height of the largest size, and replaced the trim with two layers of fabric to add more coverage and enclose the seam. The belt is recycled from a thrifted pair of gold spandex leggings and scraps of some previous costumes for the stripes, and the necklace was made using all beads I had on hand. If I ever do get a chance to wear the entire ensemble, I’ll add an action shot.

Material Notes

some kind of polyester matte satin-type stuff, fully underlined with lining fabric (both on hand). Gold spandex, blue satin, red silky stuff, cream brocade-ish stuff. Beads, hooks & eyes, invisible zipper.

I was fishing for a Cleopatra dress myself (I love costume parties) but I ended up doing a post-snake-bite dead Cleopatra and used a black and red saree to complete the ensable. The best part was the bloody snake bite on the chest. Please wear this!

The costume is brilliant! However, if I were you I would wear it as a normal dress.. ok, ok not with that spandex belt (although it contributes to the authencity a lot and as a matter of fact it is fabulous) but with another adornment (beaded belt, obi belt, etc.). The necklace is great! Bravo for creativity and inspiration! Pity you didn’t get to wear it :(
