i recently made 2 skirts, based on a skirt by australian designer gorman. (i promise i’m not trying to make a habit of copying designer clothes, despite what my last two projects look like)
the skirt was exactly what i had been looking for – a simple and cheap, but very effective, way to add a bit of interest to plain coloured cotton. and the drill i used has a nice stiffness and slight shine, which makes it looks a little bit fancy, while costing all of about $13 per skirt.
the navy and cream skirt is closest to the original skirt in shape, but the black and grey is closest to the original colours (but i played around with pleats instead of gathering and putting some pockets in)
i’d be really interested to know which one you guys like better!

girl, i love your skirts! the navy/cream color combo is so cute, but i love the pockets and pleats of the black/gray. both are supercute and inspiring!

Well you do need to change from novice! Your raw edges shouldn’t fray because they will be all bias cuts. For pockets (although you would lose the design factor of the two colors) you could do inseam pockets. There is a great how to on this website. Really do love your design.

I like both of them but if forced to pick one I guess I prefer the gathered skirt. Beautiful work. I love the zigzag shapes at the hem.

I think that the idea is great. I like the hem and pockets of the grey and black, but I like the gathers on the navy better. I think you did a great job on the zig zags. Did you turn them under and applique them on? Does not look like the works of a novice as you call yourself!

hi,
thanks for the feedback. i agree with you about the gathering, and i love the practicality of the pockets, but i couldn’t for the life of me get the gathering to move over all the seams created by the pockets, so it’s one or the other unfortunately.
as for the zigzags: the navy (my first attempt) is just top stitched onto the cream (due to me cutting the zigzags out of both fabrics) and therefore has raw edges, so we’ll see how that fares over time. but yes, the black one is folded under and (i think) appliqued on to a rectangular band of grey. which looks a lot neater.
and thankyou – i was most certainly a novice when i started sewing last year, but it’s nice to hear that i may be progressing!
