Jeweled Neckline Maxi Dress – Burdastyle 06/2010 #101
DIY Foam Rubber Embellishments – Burdastyle 1/2013

This is a petite pattern but I still wanted to give it a go, but made a big mistake by using black very stretchy mesh, which I bought at a local sewing fair. It took me a hundred times longer than normal to sew this lol than if I were using a woven fabric. Trying to sew small straight pleats on mesh stretch fabric is a no go, if you can tell from the wonky pleats on the bodice lol (I wonder if maybe hand-basting first might have made a difference). In fact it should never ever be attempted, it will likely end up a mess. Even the side seams tended to twist and curl (perhaps the seams were ’off’grain’ but this type of fabric tends to misbehave regardless); and the hem at the back rises a bit (unless when that happened its just because this lightweight material had got caught up around my butt or something lol). I also made a slightly shorter hem than the pattern. Its only for me anyway, in fact I might just say it was an intentional organic asymmetric look lol. To distract the eye I cut some geometric shapes out of craft foam-rubber pieces I bought at the dollar store and hand-stitched them onto the yoke, which is self faced in mesh, for a tribal touch, an idea I got from a back issue of burdastyle. Location: Parnell Gardens.

Post project thought: Also considering the fit was off on some of my other projects e.g. metallic bustier, twist-bandeau, and various swimsuits – I’m (finally) convinced its important/easier if I stick to the recommended material to suit the pattern/style/sizing/techniques- well unless i feel like experimenting lol

My shoots are getting more elaborate all the time, well at least for this dress because it took so long to make the thing, haha; Hand basting the pleats first would have made it easier to stitch them down, definitely, I need to get into the habit of hand basting; and why didn’t I consider using a bit of woven organza as interfacing, it would have stabilized the sewing of said pleats… Scratch that; in hindsight being stretch material, maybe I should’ve just gathered it, without even creating any pleats lol! … I just took updated pics of myself in this dress over a bikini, at Parnell Gardens- using my dad’s ancient 70s camera tripod- just like how my skin looks lol.

Nadia your dress looks really nice on you. I like what you have done to the neckline. You can try narrow iron on seam tape to stop the stretch on tricky bits it’s only about 50c metre. Just a thought. Well done for your perseverance.

I like to call my mistakes “design features” lol. I think the dress looks great on you perfect for the beach and a hot sunny day, I love what you have done with the geometric shapes on the neckline. X

Looks cool regardless of all your complaints ;) The pleats are intentional (that’s your story from now on :D) and I didn’t notice the back issue until you mentioned it :)

It looks great on you and all your effort was worth it.I made a pencil dress with s cut out criss cross back out of similar fabric. It stretched so much the straps got shorter and shorter Lol, it’s lying in a bag now.I love the neck and well done with the shapes x
