Description

BurdaStyle member Urbandon has wowed many with his dynamic sense of fashion design and style. Designer, assemblage artist and jeweler living in Sydney’s Inner West, his clothing has a radical urban edge, often utilizing dark, muted tones cut from organic sportswear textiles, his androgynous style is alluring and interesting.

This week Urbandon is sharing a tutorial on how to take a Basic T-Shirt and turn it into a Japanese-influenced top. In Urbandon’s words: The technique is used in the Japanese book Pattern Magic. These took my ideas of pattern making to a whole new level. It’s really about manipulating a basic block and turning it into something dramatic. This is a tutorial for menswear that has the same feeling as labels like Julius and Rick Owens- very androgynous. If your man may not be cutting that look then wearing this top with some leggings or jeans for yourself is a great look. Just ask my girlfriend who has a few of these now!

Material Notes

Urbandon: In this tutorial I use organically grown cotton (1 1/2 yards). This is beautiful to work with and actually feels silkier to the touch. It’s also so much better for the environment as it has not been sprayed with toxic chemicals- which is a great thing for the people who grow and handle the raw cotton. It’s about doing your part to make the world a cleaner and fairer world.

    This is really great, I love it. Love it so much I am attempting it as soon as I figure out how to get to be a knee length dress. I know you mentioned increasing the size of the strip, but wouldn’t this create fewer strips and therefore less curve? If you lengthened the Pete before stripping it? I’m not sure, I’m very hour glass figured and would want the gathering to happen at my waist…What are your thoughts? Thanks for adding a super project, and congratulations on the feature! Kudos!

      Thanks for the comment and the question. Sure, lengthening the Pete before would work. The curve can be altered ‘on the fly’ as it were, creating more (or less) curve.

    Beautiful! How would one make this tee into a full length dress? Any ideas? I love the drape and have been looking for this type of pattern for many months!

      Thanks so much! I suggest increasing the size of each strip.(Double their width) You would gain more length that way while maintaining the drape effect.

      Wowsa. Talk about a constructive comment. Goes right with the downward tilt of the sides of the mouth….. that’s me not being bitchy right back at ya…..
      Now, although I am not conservative in my style, I have pretty conservative taste when it comes to men’s clothes. But i still appreciate this as a really cool idea, and it actually looks good on the designer who has the right shape and stance for it – and if I had the right shape, ie narrower hips, I’d make it for me!

    I find it quite interesting that if this were specifically for women it would be seen as quite interesting but for men its totally unusual! I think its fabulous. Well done for pushing the boundaries. I think that mens clothes need a revolution! They must be so bored of the usuals!
