This is a melton wool toggle coat I made from Vogue 8452, an out-of-print mens coat pattern from 1992. It’s underlined with a plaid wool-cashmere blend. Great fun to put together though time-consuming and sometimes challenging for sure. Can’t wait to wear it this winter!
More about my coat on my blog, Male Pattern Boldness (MalePatternBoldness.com)
I used a medium weight, charcoal melton wool for the outer layer and a lighter weight, more loosely woven wool-cashmere blend for the underlining. I bought both in the Garment District in NYC (both $10/yd). I splurged on real horn toggles at C&C button on 38th St. — $4 each but worth it.

I’ve been trying to find a toggle coat pattern for the longest time. Do you have any recommendations on where i can find one?

Amanda, your best bet is to look on sites like Etsy, and maybe doing a generic “coat pattern” search. There are a few toggle coat patterns out there — it’s also often referred to as a duffle coat. You can try searching under that as well. Good luck!

Incredible job! Do you use a home machine, and if so, how did it handle the thick wool & leather?

My Singer 15-91 is a vintage home machine, but goes through everything. It has excellent piercing power. Highly recommended!

oh, this coat is amazing. it was definitely worth the time you invested! also i love your buttons. i think buttons can be most important on a coat as they can change the whole style so easily.
