I made these pants, which are made of cotton velvet, using Kwik sew 2123, an out-of-print mens jeans pattern from the early Nineties. I was inspired by a photo in W magazine I saw of actor Garrett Hedlund, wearing leopard pants from the Givenchy Spring/Summer 2011 collection. I was like, I want those! Now I only need some place fabulous to wear them. (I welcome all invitations.)
More about these pants on my blog, Male Pattern Boldness. Happy Holidays to all!
I used a leopard print cotton velvet I found in the Garment District in NYC for $7/yd. It only took about 2 yards to make the pants. Rather than a jean button I put in a hook and eye as a closure. I also used commercial waistband interfacing for a more sturdy waistband.

These look fantastic! It’s a great print, with really rich colours and lots of black. I think that’s what makes leopard print really work!

Totally. It’s a really nice velvet though it’s a little fragile — not to be worn every day! ;)

Can you be more specific about were you got this velvet? I love Chic Fabrics on 39th. They have some great animal print options. I made a long slim skirt out of a knit velveteen of a similar looking leopard print.

I love these so much! In fact, I think I prefer leopard in mens fashion ;). I doubt I’ll ever get my sweetie in it, though, so I will just have to enjoy them on you :)
