I made this shirt from Butterick 4712, a vintage mens shirt pattern from the early Seventies. I used a mens 36" (equivalent to a mens Small — my standard size). I made a short-sleeve version with a single breast pocket and no epaulets. I nearly ran out of fabric and had to cut the sleeves on the bias, which actually works really well, I think: you can see how the pattern on the sleeves almost seems to line up with the pattern on the torso. I also did the inside collar band in red gingham, a scrap of which I had lying around from an earlier boxer shorts project. Can’t wait till spring so I can wear this!
I used blue and white cotton gingham, primarily, and one small piece of red and white gingham.

This shirt works really well (: i love the red on the inside of the collar. It looks really neat and well finnished. I think i am going to make a long sleaved one in plaid for my brother (:

Very nice! And, yes, the bias-cut sleeves turned out to be a great thing – I can see what you mean about them “lining up” with the shirt’s main body.

Hi. I really recommend Margaret Islander’s Shirts, etc. DVD (I’m pretty sure that’s the title). You can rent it on Smartflix if you don’t want to buy it (it’s costly). Very, very helpful in this area, as well as others.

Really cute on you Peter!
I noticed the bias sleeves before I read your comments and thought you must have done it for effect – it does work well.1 Reply
