When I was in Venice I bought this beautiful mask, although I did feel a little silly because I thought I’d probably never use it. However, in December one of the charities here decided to put on a Masquerade Ball fundraiser. This was perfect – I could wear the mask…but I had no dress!
I ended up making this dress out of Silk Crepe De Chine fabric. I used a normal bodice pattern and added a ‘U’ shaped piece of material which I sewed into the bodice’s front and back seams.
The lower section is just a piece of material which I crossed over to make a split. I then sewed in a few stitches so that it wasn’t as high (although I wish I did it a little lower).
I was very scared to start this dress as I had no backup material but luckily it turned out ok.
It was really fun to wear and I had an extra fun night because I knew I’d made it myself. There’s something special about wearing clothes you’ve made yourself.
I have a few more photos on my blog here
