I made this dress for the Scholastic Art and Writing competition. It’s made completely out of masking tape and let me just tell you that it was a bit of a sticky situation (haha pardon the pun, but I just couldn’t help myself). I was inspired by architecture and an empty butterfly chrysalis.
I first constructed the underneath by using a stiff interfacing. Next I had to add a couple of layers of masking tape on top of that in order to get the length where I wanted it. Then I started adding, one by one, layers of masking tape starting from the bottom. I used over 18 rolls of masking tape and over 80 hours went into making the dress. The dress is completely wearable. It has a zipper sewn in the back for getting in and out of.
I might have nightmares about wads of tape attacking me in my sleep, but I’m pretty happy with the way it turned out. Haha. I just dropped it off for judging and I find out Sunday if it got in. Oh I’m so nervous! Wish me luck and I hope you like it :)

this is gorgeous! It would be a lovely dress made from any material but the unique textures the masking tape creates is stunning. Congrats on your award – I think it was well deserved!!!!

This is genuinely beautiful. The detail is fantastic, especially across the bust. I’m so so impressed! I hope you win the national prize!
Also, a little selfishly, it’s exactly the design I want for my wedding dress! Do you have a pattern you used for the interfacing? I know it’s a simple design, but I’ve not been able to find something that fits exactly with what I want, which this dress totally does!
Anyway, well done, and you deserve to win!

Awe thank you! I actually found out last week that it did win a national gold medal :) I have no clue how I’m going to ship the dress to New York though!! haha
Awh I wish that I could help you out, but I actually can’t find where the pattern went too :/ I need to clean my room more often! It’s a pretty simple dress though, when it comes to construction. All it is, is a basic corset bodice with a circle skirt. Hopefully that helps a little?
Good luck with your wedding dress!!

You are BRILLIANT! One of the most amazing creations I’ve seen. I wish you lived in San Francisco, you could wear it to the Gaultier exhibit at the De Young Museum. He would be impressed!

Oh my gosh. It’s truly breathtaking. You made a beautiful dress in and of itself. The fact that it’s made from masking tape serves to elevate it to an entirely different level.
