This is a dress I designed after many viewings of the legendary “Sound of Music” story. I have always loved those costumes, and this was my third dress design inspired by the classic film. After many hours of draping, grading, and sewing, I arrived at the final creation of Maria’s Gazebo Dress which has the same flutter sleeves, honeycomb smocking, and fitted belt that “Maria” wore for the “Something Good” scene.
It is actually quite easy to sew, and I made the belt adjustable so I can wear it tighter or looser depending on the day.
If you have never smocked by hand before, I put together a tutorial about it here along with pictures.
The bodice has a very flattering blouson effect, and overall the dress was so much fun to wear! I am hoping to wear for some lovely spring occasions this year, and it would be perfect as an Easter dress, party dress, or wedding guest attire.

I used a lightweight poly lining, along with two layers of blue chiffon to achieve just the right cornflower blue color.
