A rich, smoothly textured fabric encases a sweet french script.
ON THE EYE: The black velvet stripe is co-ordinated with an even thicker velvet facing where it closes with magnetic snap. The bag has a great slouch, when set down. And the gold in the print of the lining lifts it out of the ordinary.
ON THE MIND: It’s comfortable. It fits phone, purse, lunch and a book. An alternative to leather (when you don’t feel like carrying around an animal skin in summer and you have to go corporate).
See and Sew 5412 ‘A’, with minor adjustments owing to the thickness of the fabric. Restyled inside pocket to fit iPhone. Did not use the prescribed carboard insert for base, and opted for better lasting tapestry canvas with a few stitches to hold it in place.
Fiddly and fun bits:
– snap closures
– corded strap
– pleats at top edge
A striped sofa material swatch from the community centre; black velvet upholstery remnant for facing; Waverly ‘Pen Pal’ fabric for the lining; sew-in Interfacing; 2 × 1/2 inch magnetic snaps; 1x 2/3 inch magnetic snap; cotton cord for strap; tapestry canvas instead of cardboard base, triple layered and bound with bias tape (last pic)
