Description

Malanka is a Ukranian New Year’s Celebration, on the 13th of January (New Years Eve according to the Julian Calendar). It’s sometimes called old new year’s eve. Every year in Melbourne there’s a couple of balls or parties to celebrate.

This is the dress I wore to the first of the Malanka balls this year. I used a pattern for it but I can’t remember which one… I think it was a Vogue one. The halter neck was a bit awkard & took quite a bit fiddling to get it to fit properly. I’m still not completely happy with it.

For more details please visit my blog, Orchids In May.

Material Notes

Embroidered cotton blend for the skirt, silk for the waistband (I couldn’t believe it either – it almost looks like denim) & silk satin for the halter neck. All from Stitches in Armadale (one of my favourite fabric stores).

You should be happy with it, because it’s great! Although I’m not at all surprised after seeing your wedding gown!!!

Oh you’re a brave woman :-) Aside from knits, I am afraid of silks, satins, brocades any of those slippery fabrics. You say you’re still not happy with it but it looks great on you

Thanks. The halterneck certainly fit into the super slippery catergory (maybe that was part of the problem!), but the skirt & waistband were surprisingly nice fabrics to work with. The skirt was a cotton blend & the waistband a woven silk, (almost like a denim weave), which meant that it had a little more grip & was a lot easier to work with.
