New York, New Yo...
Live from Lincoln Center! This is a modified version of McCall’s 5717 (view C) single-breasted coat pattern. I nixed the ruffle hem and elongated and widened the skirt to achieve a below-the-knee look. Basically I wanted a warm winter coat that was long enough to cover dresses! I also added side pockets and belt loops.
I used a size 10 at the bodice and size 12 at the waist/hip. The nice thing about this pattern is there are pattern pieces for A/B, C and D cups!
Fabric is Italian herringbone wool from Gorgeous Fabrics (online) and a flannel-backed satin lining from B&J Fabrics here in New York. I also used 4 anchor buttons that were originally from a U.S. Navy pea coat, which I based off my grandfather’s WWII version.
I was really excited about trying my hand at tailoring! There’s a whole lot of pad-stitching, hair canvas, and fusible interfacing in this coat. I dedicated a bunch of blog posts to the making of this coat, and you can see the “reveal” post here: Sewin’ in the Rain
Fashion fabric: Italian herringbone wool; Lining: Flannel-backed satin; 4 U.S. Navy pea coat buttons; hair canvas; fusible interfacing; shoulder pads; sleeve heads
