Burda Style For people who sew

I made this in August 2008. This is another costume I wish I could re-make because I could do it so much better now, but I still like it. It’s Lucy Pevensie’s rust dress from The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. I used McCall’s 5499 view A for the overdress and C for the underdress.
I split the skirt on the overdress, and handstitched the skirt hem. I also seperated the top from the skirt so I could use the two different fabrics. I used the view B sleeves, shortened a few inches, and lined with white poly. I dyed white velvet 1/4" ribbon and weaved it through gold trim, which I sewed on the sleeve center. I hand-stitched the lacing holes on the back of the dress. I stitched gold cord around the neck edge, too. I sewed 1" gold velvet ribbon around the waist and stitched gold trim on top of that. I also embroidered vines on the bodice with embroidery floss, mimicking the painted vines on the bodice in the film.
By the way, in the picture of the back lacing, the dress isn’t lopsided, it’s my back. I had scoliosis since I was 6, and my back curves to one side. Just so you know! Also, I apologize for the wrinkles – the costume has been in a trunk for over a year!
For the underdress, I used the sideless surcoat pattern. I added a 1/4" ruffle around the neck edge and finished the side-holes with bias tape. I hand-stitched the hem too. To keep it from shifting around under the overdress, I sewed snaps to the shoulders of the underdress and the overdress top, so it can be snapped together.
Overall, I think I achieved the feeling of the real costume, even though the fabrics were not the same and my sewing skills at the time were not optimal. Maybe someday I’ll make it over again better.
