Burda Style For people who sew

I recently made the Louisa Drop-Waist Dress from BurdaStyle’s new book Sewing Vintage Modern. Though the book is great in encouraging modifications, I made the pattern up mostly as is since I’ve always wanted to make a 20s-inspired dress. I did make a few changes: I converted the facing-lining combo to a full lining since I was worried about the extra seam showing through the delicate silk charmeuse; I removed the belt in favor of a row of feather trim at the top of the skirt tiers; and I machine rolled a baby hem on each of the tiers. Other than a few pinches here and there for fit, the pattern was made up straight from the book.

All in all, I couldn’t be happier. The pattern and fabric came together into a great dress. I love how the silk shimmers and dances through the tiers as I walk. I finally have the 1920s-style dress that I’ve coveted – one with a very “vintage modern” attitude.
