My elder daughter has been head-over-heels in love with hippos since she was a year old. I’m on a constant prowl for cute hippo fabric!
Was completely overjoyed to find this gorgeous pattern on Spoonflower! And thriftily took advantage of their annual 2-for-1 FQ offer to pick some up.
There wasn’t enough to make a dress, so I made a very simple top based on this free pattern from prudentbaby.com. Since the fabric was slightly stiff (I ordered cotton poplin), I decided to lessen the gathers in the back and convert the front gathers into an inverted box pleat so the top wouldn’t be so stiff and poufy. The armholes are also a little large and low, so I brought them up 2cm – that’s still not nearly enough, though.
I used snaps for buttons and it turned out fine – the little lady was so pleased that she has requested to wear this every weekend since!
- 2 FQs of cotton poplin from Spoonflower.com for the main bodice
- 1 FQ of solid quilting cotton for the neck band
- 2 snaps
Trousers, blazers, and blouses in cool neutrals have model-off-duty style.
