Linda, with roses, is the second garment I sewed on my sewing machine – I cut the pattern out of cotton broadcloth and drafted a curved waistband for it because I found the original ‘strip’ waistband uncomfortable and not form-flattering. I learned three important things from this project:
1. I find full cirlce skirts heavy and annoying to wear (although the initial twirling part is fun ;)
2. I don’t like garments that sit at my natural waistline
3. Curved waistbands are better than straight ones
I used the Bias-Bagged hem technique from Simon Henry’s Little Black dress book to finish off the skirt (except instead of hand sewing the bias on) I used the blind hem function of my sewing machine.
I then used Pebeo fabric paints to stencil roses onto the hem of the skirt.
The grey top is a crappy store-bought thing (the last ready to wear thing I bought since I started sewing-about 3 years ago =) that I block printed using Pebeo metallic paints and wooden block print stamps from India.
The white top is a hand-embroidered cotton voile blouse I bought from an artisan’s co-op in India.
