Brooklyn, New Yo...
I found this waxed cotton fabric at AKN Fabric in Manhattan (http://www.aknfabrics.com/) and fell in love with it instantly. I mean, who was this brilliant human being who decided to put lightbulbs on clothing fabric? Most of the fabric at this shop is covered with nature-inspired images, so these lightbulbs really stood out. They look almost like some natural object. And they have an almost vintage or antique look, now that everyone is using the new florescent lightbulbs everywhere. Because you have to buy no less than 6 yards of their fabric at a time, I ended up with a LOT of it. I made a friend a wall hanging (which included real lightbulbs). But it was so shiny, I thought it would made a great dress.
So I used the Cap Sleeve Shift Dress pattern. I love the dress. But it’s TIGHT. And SHORT. This fabric has no give to it, at all, and with the gold layer, it looks like it’s painted on. It kind of breaks my heart, because I love it, but I just don’t ever find myself wearing it. Another issue I have is the fact that I didn’t line up the pattern as well as I should have. But that’s a kind of constant issue I have.
Interesting story: I actually ran into a woman, on the street, from Ghana, who told me that when she was growing up, they called this kind of fabric (with the gold overlay), “My Children Live Abroad” fabric, because it’s so…I don’t know, glam?
