I made this dress for my little sister’s first high school formal. I used the pattern from Mary Adams’s Party Dress Book with very little modification to the pattern. I did add an elastic stay to the neckline to keep it from gaping and to allow a little more space in the bodice for her to grow (the action shot in the second picture displays the lovely lack of gaping), a waist stay, a bra stay (a piece of boning in the back that’s tucked into the back of the bra to keep it from scooting up over the dress back), horsehair braid in the hem, and boning along the seam lines in the lining. It was my first time making so many stays and I used Claire Schaeffer’s Couture Sewing Techniques book to guide me.
