Leather and Roses

Vantaa, Finland

I made this dress for me to wear at my friends wedding. I was the made of honor and wanted to wear something special. I had a vision of leather bodice combined with flowing skirt. I tried to find chiffon for the skirt but as the fabric choices are quite limited in stores in Finland I found this beautiful viscose which ended up working wonderfully. The viscose was pretty hard to work with, luckily I have serger/overlock machine to hem it with. The leather for the bodice was originally from very ugly men’s leather jacket. I like the idea of recycling old materials.

I used two patterns as a guideline for the dress, the burda swing dress for the bodice and chiffon maxidress pattern for the skirt ( I had to alter the bodice to fit properly. I made them separately and then sew them together before sewing the zipper on the side.

This is how it turned out. I really loved my dress.

Material Notes

Leather bodice from second hand material. (It was butt-ugly 80’s men’s leather jacket size XL)
The skirt is viscose with cotton lining.

Boah, I really really adore that dress! I love the breach of style here (the nice and innocent flowers and the sexy leather ;-) I like leather bodices so much, but am really afraid of sewing with leather, as it’s also expensive. But I’m thinking about using leather from an old jacket, though, that’s a good idea.

Thank you for your kind words :). The dress was a great mix of rock’n’roll and romance. I really recommend of using recycled leather as it is very expensive to buy as new. The jacked cost me 3,5€ in a second hand store and i still have material left from it to use in another projects. It was a bit of a challenge to arrange the patterns on the jacket pieces but it ended up working well. The bodice has few extra seams on it but I like how it looks. Leather it self was easier to sew than I thought. I just bought leather needles for my old sewing machine. I actually clued (special leather clue) the seam allowances to each other for extra support and left the neckline and arm holes unfinished.
