Description
James Dean, the Fonz, Joan Jett…The classic motorcycle jacket just oozes ‘cool’. Here, we created a pattern for the ideal motorcycle jacket with all the essential details: asymmetrical center front with convertible lapel, zippered pockets, shoulder vents, tabs at the back waist, wrist zips…But then, instead of going down the tried-and-true road with black leather, we decided to give a twist to this classic with a luscious mustard wool. We can’t wait to see your interpretation!
Material Notes
Leather and faux leather can be tricky to sew, so perhaps try doing this jacket in wool, like we did. Silk lining, metal zippers, snaps, interfacing.

I have to agree with the commenter above about the price: patterns take time and energy to create. While I think Burda’s motives with this website aren’t entirely altruistic—like I think the free patterns are with the hope of our buying something eventually, that it’s not just generosity—I don’t think it’s fair to expect them to do it otherwise. Sometimes showing respect to someone’s efforts involves cold hard cash. And, last time I checked, cool patterns at the pattern shop cost a helluva lot more than $5.
Meanwhile, I think that it’s brilliant that Burda has created this community, and created a vessel for cultural knowledge. Seriously: is there another place on the web where what is basically our foremothers’ sewing knowledge is being transmitted?
That said, I love this pattern, too. I would happily buy if it I needed another motorcycle jacket. Thanks Burda!

It looks awesome and i wish i could make it but im afraid my expertise fall short…on the matter of payment…i think people are entitled to think that 5 dollars is a bit much for a pattern and it’s not disrespectful to voice their opinion…but there are tons of other free downloads that im sure you guys have used so its like we owe it to burda for all the other free downloads…i dont think i’ll pay 5 dollars…yet…simply because im not gonna make it right now but perhaps in the future if im feeling generous i’ll buy it.

This pattern is nearly identical with a jacket pattern published in Burda World of Fashion 9/2008 so those of you in Europe should consider buying the magazine instead of the download. It’s cheaper (the magazine is 4,50€), you don’t have to print and glue the pages and you get another 30 patterns for your money. Back issues of BWOF are still available on Burdafashion.com or maybe ask at your public library if they carry BWOF.

Side note:
Why is everyone complaining about $5? Pick and choose my friends. Skip the coffeehouse latte and get the pattern if you want it. We should have all known that the creative geniuses at Burdastyle would not be able to keep offering up their patterns for nothing and keep this site going. We keep asking for more and are so demanding with all our questions. You need serious staff to handle all that plus expansion and you need serious capital to afford staff. Think about it. It is a very simple concept.

Wow, now many of the old patterns aren’t free anymore. Lucky me I downloaded them all before … Can you explain why exactly this happened? I mean Burdastyle is getting bigger and bigger everyday, now the first pattern for 5$ is online, which isn’t that cheap anymore. Really sad. I once again want to say that a possibility to donate for this site may be an option, it works for wikipedia.

I think it’s an awesome pattern! I agree that it’s frustrating to suddenly have to pay for patterns that used to be free. That particular change I don’t agree with. However, I understand, as a business, the introduction of charging for new patterns. Also, $5 is a reasonable price for what appears to be a complicated pattern. I noticed someone was asking how much fabric was needed. I found on the page with the option to buy: “2 1/4 yards self, 1 1/4 yards lining”. I’m sure that varies a little with size, but that doesn’t seem like very much material, so the cost of the jacket would really depend on the actual fabric you pic. I can’t say that I’m gonna attempt leather, but I don’t want something as thick as wool. I agree with many of the other ladies: it looks too thick and bulky. I am a small woman, but I was recently pregnant, and I don’t care to look bigger than I am anymore :).

OMG!!!!! The pricing of the old free patterns has started already AAAAAAAArghhhHHH! I misunderstood yesterday’s announcement. Well, I have to apologize in regard to my 1st comment, 5$ is expensive when we don’t have the ex-free pattern to refer to and try to re-create it ourselves and pay 3$ for Idit, 5$ for the Alden coat ……sigh….too bad…
I thought that Ravelry’s concept would be the one that Burdastyle adopts, but that was not the case. Still I understand the effort in making the pattern. Sad to notice that it ends up cheaper buying in sweat shops afterall and that’s not really fair and R..espectfull or ethical but hey. Someone commented here that in the end it might be cheaper to buy Burda magazine.
Hey all! take a look at Ravelry’s concept. Now I see what you mean Carilla. There are loads of free patterns there and well still there some you have to pay to be able to download, but heaps of great patterns are for free! Maybe it is time for us all to share even more and try to post our own patterns…. At least that’s what I will try to do in the future…

I just adore this coat. If I saw this in a shop I would definitely buy it. I am not sure if I am gutsy enough to make it. Does it tell you how much material will be needed? And what kind? If it does I might buy the pattern and attempt it.

Love the design, the colour and the fabric, though I also think it is very short, especially for those of us who are larger than your model. The price seems reasonable, even more so when you consider that over here most patterns cost £6.99 and upwards.

I wouldn’t like to sell a great pattern like this for only $5; think of all the sweat and tears that went into this! It’s an absolutely lovely jacket – and although I was also a bit concerned about the ‘bulkiness’ you could always use a thinner wool with a lining…

Five dollars is not that much, ladies! This is a great looking jacket – well worth the five dollars as far as I’m concerned!
Just pack a lunch for one day or skip going to Starbucks and you’ll be fine. No whining! ;)
