Another wonderful op-shop find – this vintage Simplicity pattern for a casually fitted sleeveless dress with back zipper closure. The neckline is round at the front and V at the back, with an optional patch pocket feature. It is a “simple to make” or jiffy pattern with only two main pattern pieces. As usual, I had to shorten the bodice and skirt (because I’m short.) This pattern is circa 1962 and perfect for a Madmen-themed lunch.
I made this dress for my 30th birthday lunch with the girls, where everyone put in a great effort to be dressed in their best 1950-60s attire. This dress was very easy to sew, with only two darts, main pattern pieces and facings. I used a lightweight Japanese cotton lawn because the small pink flowers reminded me of prints from the early 60s and because it was on sale! I didn’t make the belt or self fabric tie belt but used a vintage belt instead. With this dress on, my hair done up and all the girls looking beautifully dressed, I really did feel like one of the “ladies who lunch.”
Kimono lawn blossom – 100% cotton ($6.00/metre, Spotlight clearance table); thread; invisible zipper.
Pattern notes also suggest cotton and cotton blends, cotton satin, textured cottons, gingham, seersucker, broadcloth, pique, chambray, linen, rayon, silk, synthetic, textured silk, crepe, wool and wool blends, sheer wool, double knit
