Description

I made this lovely dress from New Look 6146 pattern, view B, for my anniversary dinner out with my sweet & wonderful husband. I made the main dress out of a lace material that had adhered to a backing material. I have never seen this type of fabric for apparel sewing as it is more like a home decor weight material. Who knows-maybe it is home dec fabric! Oh well, it was easy, but thick, to sew and I love the result. I made the midriff and spagetti straps out of polyester satin in black for contrast and to “break up” all that lace.
It was a very nice pattern to sew. I did a muslin first to check fit which was a good idea as I did make a few minor fitting adjustments. There are a couple of hand sewing parts for the midriff lining or if you were to do more couture sewing on this dress. I love the pattern and I will definitly use it again. I think the fit is good for me and there are many design options for which one could use this dress as a base pattern.

Nice dress ! Great fit. Congrats on your anniversary. I have similar material, and I will definately be putting in a contrast as you have, as I also though it was to much lace. I’ll be cruizing through Oregon soon; do you have any great fabric/sewing places to suggest?

      Thanks Rita!
I bought this fabric at Mill End Store in Milwaukee, OR (a few miles south of Portland) and that is my favorite fabric store. Also, Fabric Depot in South East Portland is HUGE and has a very nice fabric selection as well. Downtown Portland has Josephine’s Dry Goods which has really lovely fabrics, but is a bit pricey and has a smaller assortment to choose from, Bolt is also nice, but again small and carries mostly quilting type cottons. The Whole 9 Yards I hear is nice (have yet to go there), but I think carries mostly home decor fabrics. Button Emporiam is a wonderful little boutique shop downtown with beautiful buttons and trims.
Have fun in Portland and happy sewing!
