Burda Style For people who sew

Non-commital Renaissance style billowing top with optional cuffs and rose and bib brooches.

The top itself is a hybrid of a Italian Renaissance raglan chemise pattern I found online and Burda Style 2010-02-117/118 . I doubled up the layer for the front and back to preserve my modesty, but kept the sleeves single layer for softness. There’s minimum cutting required – I used the full width of the 60" or so fabric for the body and half that width for the sleeves. The cuffs and brooches were actually made from cut-offs from the sleeves – I had originally intended to make the sleeves double layered as well. Now it gives me extra options in how I wear it. See my second blog post for more pictures of different combinations

I usually stay away from billowy clothings and instead struggle with close-fitting projects. But this was a resounding success for me. I love the non-commital versatility and how well it works with different styling, like the vaguely country western styling photo here (worn with two other sewing projects – a scratch boucle pencil skirt and a stiff home-furnishing grade faux suede bolero).
