Knit Top in Royal Blue
Added Nov 3, 2012
Loosely fitted, pullover knit top with pleated neckline and sleeves gathered into cuffs. This top is based on McCall’s 6604 view D.
I lengthened the pattern and also widened it towards the hip to give it more room. I also did my usual sleeve length modification. I don’t like long sleeves on knit tops, always having to roll it up. Elbow length is perfect.
The first sleeve cuff I did followed the pattern and instructions. But I couldn’t fit the cuff around my sewing machine’s free arm! (My sewing machine with a narrower free arm is still in the shop.) Even trying to sew the cuff in the round without a free arm proved to be very difficult. Since the the cuff is interfaced, it didn’t stretch. The interfacing made the cuff feel uncomfortable, anyway. So, I ripped off the failed attempt, drafted a cuff for ribbing, and cut it out of the fashion fabric.
There was too much ease on the pattern’s sleeve cap, so I redrafted the cap, reducing the amount of ease to about 1 cm, and distributed that ease between the front and back armholes.
The neckline binding is a little too wide. I was playing around with widths. Finished binding that is 1 cm wide was not deep enough, a result from a previous knit top project. Next time, I’ll try a 2 cm wide finished binding.
