Burda Style For people who sew

I found a soft, bright red knit dress and at first sight I knew it will turn into a great skirt! Because knits stretch a little and are wrinkle-free (not always; but compared to cotton, definitely!), I think they’re most suitable to make easy skirts with elastic bands. The black fabric belt is something that came with a dress I bought some time ago but I almost never use them but I keep them anyway, believing they’ll come in handy someday. And it did! A notable tip to share is that I didn’t put the elastic band all around the waist; I tried to leave some straight part on the front where the bow is, so the elastic band surrounds only my sides and back part of the waist. This way, you get less gather on the front and thus it doesn’t make your belly puffed up like most of the elastic-banded skirts do. Actually , with a jacket or a cardigan on, it even looks like a nice skirt with a zipper! Now, the part I’m not proud of is photo 5… I used this white bias tape to hide in the raw edge. It accomplished my goal alright but my tendency to become sloppy where others can’t see is still a problem… long way to become a “real” sew-er!
Overall, I’m quite happy with the result and have gone to work wearing it with a black top (as in the photo) or a white blouse. Now I’m wondering what I should do to the upper part of the cut dress.
