Kiddy Tiered Skirt Yeehaw!

Another one for my 11-year-old niece which I wouldn’t mind stealing myself if I had made it my size! I was going to use Burda Kids 9547 E, but decided I’d prefer the tiers to be free-floating like the out-of-print McCall 5920 A. So I ended up improvising.
Although it’s just 3 rectangular pieces of fabric, it took me ages. Partly because I decided the cut lace pattern was too nice not to scallop. And there were no ready-made scallop salvages on this one :-( So I had to satin stitch every single one of them damn scallops!
And the gathering….good grief! I don’t know how others who sew for kids / ballerinas / bridezillas do it! Anyone got gathering tricks up their sleeves? Or do I have to do it the old-fashion basting stitch way with lots and lots of tea & patience?
But I like the result the more I think about the styling possibilities. Hmm, I think I just might have enough fabric leftover to make one my size!
