Description
We’ve updated our Kathrine dress for a new look. We shortened the hemline and brought in some of the volume on the sideseams to accentuate the waist. If you feel like you swim in voluminous dresses, consider cinching the waist with a black belt to add an alluring and sophisticated shape to the front of the dress. This pattern is available in all sizes, the plus pattern can be found by clicking here.
Material Notes
From BurdaStyle sizes 34 – 60: Self fabric requires 2 3/4 – 3 1/2 yards (2,10 – 3,15 m.) of fabric, sash requires 7/8 yard (.75 m.) of fabric

I love the way you restyled the dress as the flare skirt bottom of the original would’ve made me pass by the pattern. Your fabric choice is wonderful and renders the dress timeless. Lovely jewelry choice as well. Well done!

The hem could be lower, and the skirt, fuller, but the choice of fabric and the styling are spot on! The makeup’s great too! I wonder what lipstick she used?

I see Burda style members defining what “fashion is about”. We do it. We, the ignorant masses who buy, make and wear clothes. A person can sneer, define and innovate all he or she likes but what makes something “fashion” is the fact that people are wearing it. So we can ignore the would-be divas and cats trolls and just get on with it. Nice dress. Not useful for me, but nice dress. Will suit some people.

Welll I’ve had a cup of tea and a chocolate buscuit to calm down my excitement and thought I would update you. I have now bought the pattern as it is close enough to a dress I planned to make it less bother than making the pattern from scratch.
I’ll add a sleeve (bingo wings!) and cut the dress at the waist. I plan to make a deepish waistband insertion and make the bodice, waist and skirt in 3 different colours. I will probably turn the back bodice princess seams into pleats to mirror the front. If it all comes off and I can figure out the technology I’ll post the result when I’m done.(I haven’t done that before so it will be something else new).
By the way – perhaps ‘average’ would be a more acceptable substitute for ‘normal’ size although that would not include the girl in the picture – average size in the UK is 16. ie. half are smaller, half are bigger so who’s normal?

Well I don’t know about the dress but this is definitely one of the most interesting discussion threads I have come across so far on Burda. Who knew sewers were so passionate about visual composition in photography. And it’s gone on for days! It has everything. Passion, malice, insults – almost as good as Gossip Girl.

I think the dress is fab, dont like the shoes or accessories but dress is a classic lbd. I think Ichigogirl hit the nail on the head. I’m a beginner and believe it or not aspire at present to be able to sew such a dress. Everyone starts somewhere, even you Jose Zabala. I dont see the need for your negative comments here.

The terms ‘real’ women and ‘normal-sized’ will be the death of me. I suppose that because of my low size then I’m some abnormal freak that shouldn’t be modelling clothes because I’m too gross for people to look at? Positive discrimination is STILL discrimination. Asking specifically for ‘normal’ women (whatever that is) is STILL choosing people because of their size and not their talent, which is discrimination. Flipping it on it’s head will eventually damage skinnier ‘unreal’ women who will think they’re too gross to look at and they’re fake and hated.

I totally agree with queenorivers! I’m a skinny girl (or a not-normal-sized woman and alot of people automaticly assume, that because I’m tall and skinny, and sometimes do modeling-jobs, I’m either stupid or have an eating-disorder. Some of us just look that way, because that’s what nature intended fx. me to look like.
So let’s give this size-issue a rest. There’s no right or wrong!!

This looks fab – I like the less full cut of this version. I might actually make this one. I think the basic pattern is flattering, but the alterations to take in the side seams makes it even more flattering, whether you are small or large busted. And the photos are fantastic. Love the look.

Love the model and staging. Being a modernist lover and one who has seen enough Japanese portraiture… I love the twist….Is that a pigeon or a peacock? :-) I think that the pigeon is very iconic of the west. Love the wood screen and Katherine looks gorgeous and regal in that dress…I would love to know how the belt was made???? Was it woven by Burda or found? Beautiful dress….. Love it!

the truth, i realy don’t like the original kathrine dress, it’s to sloppy for me. but the dress is BEAUTIFULL! i’m new in the all sewing field so i didnt understand how they took the original pattern and turn it to that dress. can anyone please help me?

I agree about the Edward gorey picture,e.g. the character of Mrs Danvers in Rebecca. However, this aspect should have been exagerated to the utmost. But hey…talking about outstreching the budget for a single photo shoot!!

I agree with the previous comments, I too much prefer this version. However, I think the make-up is too austere – and the pose too serious perhaps- and doesn’t enhance Carol’s natural beauty and enticing smile!
