This dress is proof that you can kick butt and still look totally fab at the same time! I first got the idea for this dress when my husband and I moved into our apt. The guy that lived here before us must have loved himself some karate… or another martial art in which they wear these lovely belts! I saw it hanging on the back of our door when we moved in and I stowed it in the back of my mind until just the right moment when I brought it out and dusted it off.
On one of my early trips to my favorite minority fabric dealers in our local bazaar, this fabric jumped into my arms and claimed me. As soon as I walked in the door of our apt I grabbed the belt and wrapped it around the wad of fabric. I have been working on this dress for quite some time now. I sewed the bust by hand… picked apart the belt (much more difficult and thready than you’d expect from the simple statement there)… but the fabric was so stinking thick that hand sewing was monstrous! I kept setting it aside. UNTIL… my first day with nothing to do, (the husband out playing soccer)… me and the sewing machine got this done!
I love the bright colors, I love the thick skirt, I am not at all adjusted to the depths the neckline plunges to! The funny hat/hair accessory is the left over belt turned head piece… I can’t get enough of the big hair accessory business!
One lemon karate belt
One friendly happy plaid-tastic wad of hand woven fabric
patience in hand sewing
a fab new sewing machine!!!!!!!
