This simple tunic was modeled after the Indian kameez, the overtunic that is part of the popular salwar kameez ensemble. I developed the design myself, after examining at close hand several examples of kameez. I thought about adding some embroidery around the neckline, as is popular for kameez, but decided the elegant simplicity of the silk called for a simpler neckline, and so I ended up topstitching in straight lines around the binding using the same thread as I used to make up the garment. It should be noted that this project is particularly easy for beginners as there is no shaping (darts) and the seams are very straightforward. Also, I provide detailed instructions that draw on my Technique called “Drafting the Easy-fitting OverGarment Block” which should allow just about anyone to put this together!
Silk, silk thread, binding tape made out of self fabric, a long “invisible” zipper. I actually bought the silk fabric used for this in an Indian “silk and saree” boutique in Vancouver.
